PURPOSE:To provide an electroviscous fluid permitting to control its viscosity by the application of an electric voltage. CONSTITUTION:An electroviscous fluid comprises an electrical insulating medium and polarizing fine particles dispersed in the electrical insulating medium. The electrical insulating medium comprises a dielectric anisotropic liquid, preferably a nematic liquid crystal, having a dielectric constant of 5 toward of either of the parallel direction or vertical direction based on the long axis of the molecule. The electroviscous fluid gives a large viscous effect at a voltage low in comparison with conventional electroviscous fluids, and gives a further large shear stress force when a high voltage is applied. The electroviscous fluid is widely applied to devices requiring large shear stresses such as clutches, hydraulic circuits and vibration-preventing devices, thereby bringing about industrially large merits. |
