The operation of a rudder is based on the generation of lift when the rudder is placed at an angle. As the rudder angle increases, the lift becomes greater, until the flow is released when the lift remains constant. The moment at which the flow is released can be postponed by using a moving guide fin or flap, which makes the rudder construction complicated. By designing the rudder as a double rudder comprising two rudder profiles which are arranged one behind the other and are rigidly connected to one another, it is possible to significantly improve the rudder action compared to a conventional rudder, without the complication of moving parts.
