The communications IC (1) has an input/output interface (7,8) for converting received serial data into parallel data handled by the communications IC and for converting parallel data provided by the communications IC into serial output data. A protocol circuit (2,3,4,13) converts the parallel data into the required protocol for the IC and converts the protocol signals into parallel signals fed to the input/output interface, with the protocol circuit controlling a modulation circuit (9) for modulating the signal received from the protocol circuit and a demodulation circuit (10) for demodulating the signal fed to the protocol circuit.
