A wind turbine power converter is disclosed to smooth output power from a variable speed wind turbine (10) to reduce power fluctuations on the output line. The power converter includes an AC-to-DC generator-side converter (20) connected to a variable speed generator (16) that converts wind energy to electric energy, a DC-to-AC line-side inverter (28) connected to a utility grid, and DC voltage link (24) connected to an electrical energy storage device (25) such as a battery or a fuel cell, or a photovoltaic or a solar cell. Also, an inverter controller (50) and a power controller (54) control the current through the active switches (82) at the line side inverter to supply a selected combination of real and reactive power to the utility grid. A voltage waveform is used as a reference to form a current control waveform in an inverter control unit (88) for each output phase. The current control waveform is applied to a current regulator and then to the drive circuit (90) that controls currents for each phase of the line-side inverter. |
