The workpiece (30) is held with its axis or right angles to the direction of transfer. A transfer mechanism independent of the work holding fixture system indexes the work from station to station. At a work station (2) the workpiece is clamped by its end bosses in 90 deg. V-blocks (36a,36b) arranged with one locating face (42) horizontal and the other (41) vertical. A stamp (51) clamps the work. When the workpiece must be turned through 90 deg. to present another face for machining at the next station (3), the work locating V-block at this station is oriented differently. USE/ADVANTAGE - Compact layout of machine. Simplified transfer and good visibility of operation. Accurate machining of vehicle differential housings to datum.
