The method can discriminate the T-160 video tape and the T-120 video tape from each other in the time of reproducing the recorded data. If the reproducing time is over 150 minute after checking the one rotation of the supply reel and the take-up reel, the kind of reproducing tape is discriminated as T-60, T-30. Otherwise, the residual amount of tape is checked for 10 minute as standard of T-120 tape. If the checked time is over 8 minute, the reproducing tape is T-90 and T-120 video tape. If the checked time is below 8 minute, it can be recognized as T-160 video tape.
