The rapid coupling has a connector body (4) with a spring loaded self sealing valve (18) which is opened when the coupling nipple (6) of the connecting pipe is inserted. A sleeve (30) around the coupling releases a ratchet catch (32) to enable the valve to be disconnected. Two ratchets are provided, to hold the valve in a partially opened setting, for venting, and a fully released setting. The dome shaped valve element has a central venting duct (22) and a side slot (24) for a limited venting flow. When the supply line is switched off the two stage removal of the coupling vents the system. ADVANTAGE - Fully venting coupling, no damage through thermal expansion of trapped gasses, no uncontrolled pipe movements when opened.
