(A) An ion exchange process for an electro-erosion machining liq. involves passing the liq. over the surface of an ion exchange resin and stirring the resin. (B) An ion exchange appts. has (i) a device for adjusting the resistivity of a process liq. by using an ion exchange resin (16); (ii) a stirrer (26,27) for stirring the resin; and (iii) a drive (24,25) for operating the stirrer. Stirring may be carried out continuously throughout the ion exchange process. Alternatively, stirring is carried out in repeated cycles of operation and interruption, pref. controlled according to resistivity measurements carried out on the liq. Resistivity measurements are pref. also used to detect the end of the useful life of the ion exchange resin. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is used esp. for adjusting the resistivity of water used as electro-erosion machining liq. The process and appts. are inexpensive and simple, provide extended useful life of the ion exchange resin and have reduced operating costs.
