PRODUCTION OF ACTIVATED CARBON MADE OF SPHERICAL FIBER LUMP

PURPOSE:To improve the mixing state of short fibrous infusible carbon fiber being short fiber as a raw material and powdery binder for producing activated carbon made of spherical fiber lump from coal-based pitch. CONSTITUTION:Short fiber as a raw material having <=1mm weight average fiber length and a powdery binder having 3-50mum average particle diameter are introduced into a vessel. The short fiber as the raw material and the powdery binder are mixed in a fluidization state by vibrating the vessel and also passing gas from the low part. The short fiber is sphered by adding water or liquid such as the aqueous solution of a compound having curing action in the fluidization state. The obtained spherical fiber lumps are activated. Thereby productivity is improved in comparison with a conventional method for using a resin solution as a binder, a method for using suspension in which fine powdery pitch is dispersed in water and a method for mixing the fine powdery pitch with short fiber for the raw material in a dry state. Besides, activated carbon made of a spherical fiber lump which is extremely good in the form maintaining characteristics and homogeneous is produced industrially and favorably at low cost.
