PURPOSE:To make an electric discharge lamp lighting device as cheap and small as possible by resolving the disadvantage of continuing glow discharge during manual turning on/off operations. CONSTITUTION:An igniter IGN which starts an electric discharge lamp DL by means of high voltage pulses is provided. An OR gate which controls the igniter IGN is provided. If an electric discharge lamp DL is to be restarted, energy required for restarting depends upon the length of time since power supply is restarted. A large amount of energy is required within a certain period of time since power supply is restarted. Thus, the electric potential of the electric discharge of a condenser C51 is compared using comparators IC1, IC2. If the electric potential is Vx or more or Vy or less, the F point is used as H level to drive the igniter IGN. A large amount of starting energy is required between Vx and Vy, when high voltage pulses cannot be generated. |
