The magnetic recording medium has a composition of formula Tbx-Co100-x where 17.5 <= x <= 25.5 at%. The magnetic recording medium is prepared by (a) sputtering a protective layer of AlN 500 angstroms thick on the epoxy substrate of 2.0 mm thickness and 200 mm diameter, which has pregrooves of 2.0μm pitch, (b) depositing 1000 angstroms binary alloy of Tbx-Co100-x thereon by RF- sputtering, (c) sputtering 500 angstroms AlN, and (d) sputtering 100 angstroms Al thereon as a reflecting film. The coercive force of Tb-Co thin film is higher than 5 Koe at room temperature and lower than 500 Oe at 250 deg.C. The magnetic recording medium can remove grain boundary noise and produce a high quality signal to noise ratio. |
