The magnetic recording medium has a composition of Tb23Fe71X6 where X is Pt, Pd, Co or Cr. The medium is prepared by (a) sputtering a 600 angstroms protective layer of AlN on the epoxy substrate of 120 mm diameter and 2-5 mm thickness, (b) depositing amorphous tertiary alloy of Tb-Fe-X of 1000-1200 angstroms thickness thereon by Magnetron Type RF Sputtering, (c) sputtering AlN 600 angstroms thick thereon, and (d) sputtering Al 1000 angstroms thick as a reflecting layer thereon. The coercive force of Tb-Fe-X thin film is 1.2-1.5 KOe, the Curie temperature is 80-120 deg.C, and the Kerr rotational angle is about 0.3≦̸.
