A symmetrical polynitropolyphenyl compound 1,3,5-trinitro-2,4,6-tripicrylbenzene, which is an explosive compound with good thermal stability and high initiation sensitivity, is prepared by reacting a trihalonitrobenzene with a picrylhalide in the presence of copper dust and suitable organic diluent at a temperature ranging between 150.degree.C and 190.degree.C. The improved thermal stability and high initiation sensitivity of the compound make it particularly suitable for utilization in booster cups and exploding bridge wire (EBW) detonators. |
