The mixts. (I) contain (A) epoxy resin with glycidyl gps. directly linked to O, N or S atoms, (B) polyarylene ether with reduced viscosity 0.1-2.0 dl/g (1% in NMP), contg. 1-100 mol.% untis of formula (II) and 99-0 mol.% units of formula -(O-Ar'-O-Ar)- (III) and opt. (C) amino or phenolic hardener. Ar' = divalent residue of activated dihalo cpd. which may be nucleophile substd. and Ar = divalent residue of diphenol. Pref. (I) contain 20-80 wt.% (A), 2-40 wt.% (B) and 5-50 wt.% amine hardener. (A) is a diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol A, F or S, N,N,O-triglycidyl-m- (or p)-aminophenol (A1), or N,N,N',N'-tetra glycidyl-4,4'-diamino-diphenylmethane (A2) or -3,3-diethyl-4,4'-diamino diphenylmethane. Ar' = (opt. 1-4C alkyl- or alkoxy-substd.), -pPhe-X-(Phe-X)c-pPhe-, -pPhe-X-(Phe)d-X-pPhe- (with Phe = phenylene; and pPhe = 1,4-phenylene; X = CO, SO2 or SO; c = 0 or 1; and d = 2 or 3), CN-substd. phenylene, pyridine or 1,2-pyrazine diyl, pref. -pPhe-SO2-pPhe-, 2-cyano-1,3-phenylene or -pPhe-Co-pPhe, (-pPhe-SO2-pPhe). USE/ADVANTAGE - W.r.t. prior art sulphone modifiers based on 2,2'-dihydroxy biphenyl, polyether-sulphones based on 4,4'-dihydroxy-3,3'-diphenyl biphenyl (IV) give epoxy resin mixts. (I) with improved mechanical properties.
