The water softener uses an ion exchanger and a salt container (1), providing a salt soln. for regeneration of the ion exchanger. The container has a salt refilling opening fitted with a cover (7), a water inlet (13) and an outlet (15) for the salt soln. The uniform salt soln. is mixed with a variable quantity of water via a mixing device, pref. incorporated in the outlet (15) for the salt soln. Pref. the outlet has a horizontal salt filter (17) at its entry point, divided by a horizontal partition (19) into 2 chambers (21, 23), communicating via an adjustable opening (27) in the partition (19). ADVANTAGE - Allows supplied salt soln. conc. to be adjusted in steps to match different water hardnesses.
