A hybrid composite material uses a combination of ultra-high performance fibres and standard performance fibres embedded in a common matrix of epoxy resin. The ultra-high performance fibres are aligned with the principal stress direction of the material, whilst standard fibres extend in the secondary stress directions. A preferred material uses a combination of ultra-high performance and standard performance carbon fibres, but composites with non-carbon or even non-like fibres are also contemplated. Such hybrid materials possess mechanical properties approaching those of unhybridised ultra-high performance composites, but are considerably cheaper. |
