The supermarket has various items, pref. grouped (2) according to item type, on the shop floor (1). Each item group has a respective input device (3), with which the customer can select goods. The input devices are coupled to a computer (8) via which an order can be made up in a warehouse (6). After payment for specified goods, they are delivered to the customer. The input devices work in conjunction with an identity card picked up by the customer at the shop entrance (10). Pref. the items on sale are represented graphically on the input device keypad. USE/ADVANTAGE - Any large stores. Eliminates risk of theft since items are only delivered upon payment, reduced operating costs quicker and more efficient shopping.
