<p>The invention relates to a movable ventilation system provided for a work station whose atmosphere is vitiated by solvent vapour, toxic gases or dust from which it is desired to protect the operators of the workstation. This system comprises a blowing plenum (14) overhanging a grating floor (8) mounted over a pit (1) which is maintained under a reduced pressure in order to form an extraction area where the air blown by the plenum (14) and laden with polluting agents emitted in the work zone is extracted. The plenum (14) has a blowing surface area less than the total surface area of the pit (1) of the system and is mounted on a plenum-supporting carriage (11) which can move along the entire length of the system. Means (3, 7, 11, 27) are provided for limiting the extraction area on the grating floor (8) to an area corresponding substantially to the blowing surface area of the plenum (14) projected onto the grating floor (8), this area moving in conjunction with the carriage supporting the plenum (14).
