Liquid crystal device with holding medium between transparent conductive films - has active material distributed in cavities within holding medium in sandwich construction with transparent films and substrates

The liq. crystal material (3) is arranged in cavities within a holder (4) flanked by two transparent and electrically conductive films (2) which lie on the insides of the transparent substrates (1). The prod. of the total surface area of the cavities, the distance between the films (2), and the difference of refractive index between the material (3) and the holder (4) is not less than 4.2. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for vehicle or building window. Durable device can be extended easily in area and has modulation transfer function of 15% or more w.r.t. variable vol. of transparency to solar radiation energy.
