Process for obtaining 2-hydroxymethyl-3,5-dimethyl-4-R- pyridine of formula I where R is a nitro or methoxyl group which comprises: a) deoxygenation and introduction of a cyano group into the 2 position of 3,5-dimethyl-4-R- pyridine-N-oxide of formula III to obtain 3,5-dimethyl-4- R-pyridine-2-carbonitrile; b) hydrolysis of the cyano group of the latter compound, yielding 3,5-dimethyl-4-R- pyridine-2-carboxylic acid, and c) reduction of the carboxyl radical of the above acid yielding the compound of formula I. The compound of formula I is an intermediate in the synthesis of omeprazole, which is a very effective drug. <IMAGE>
