Allergy is treated by the in vivo administration of an immunotoxin to selectively deplete the population of cells bearing the IgE isotype. Pref. the immunotoxin consists of an antibody specific to IgE coupled to a toxin such as pokeweed antiviral protein, intact ricin or ricin B chain. The antibody consists of a Fab fragment of an antibody, specifically for the IgE isotype. The antibody can be attached to the toxin by known methods, incl. periodate-carbohydrate, sulpho-SADP and MBMS.
