A drive system for a motor vehicle having at least one driven wheel (1, 7) on each side of the longidudinal axis of the vehicle comprises an internal combustion engine (13), an electric generator (11) driven by the internal combustion engine (13), an electric motor (9) for each driven wheel (1, 7) and an electronic control system (15, 19, 21) that controls the amount of electric power supplied by the generator (11) to the individual electric motors (9). The control system (15, 19, 21) controls the power and the distribution of the driving torques to the individual wheels (1, 7) so that the roll steer effect of the vehicle is controlled by conferring a yawing moment that depends for example on the transverse acceleration of the vehicle or on the extent of a yawing moment generated by a side wind. By measuring the wheel pressure of the individual driven wheels, the road grip limits of the wheels may be detected and the electric motors may be controlled in order to improve traction. |
