PROCESS FOR THE DISPOSAL OF MUNICIPAL WASTE AND MANUFACTURE OF FUEL ALCOHOL

A process for the conversion of cellulose from municipal waste has been developed. Significant features are: (1) the use of concentrated hydrochloric acid at moderate temperatures with mechanical action to hydrolyse the cellulose to glucose; (2) recovery of the acid from the hydrolyzate by electrodialysis to provide concentrated sugar solutions for fermentation; and (3) continuous distillation of the ethanol produced.
