Light-sensitive compsn. contains a photocurable polymer cpd. (I) with at least 1 (wt.%) units of formula -(CH2-C(R1)(X-R2-Y))- (IA). In (IA), X = a single bond or ester or amide gp.; Y = a polymer gp. with Mw = at least 500, at least 5% of which consists of gps. of formula -(CH2-C(R3)(R4-Z))- (II); Z = a functional gp. of formula (III) or (IV). R1 and R3 = H or Me; R2 and R4 = a single bond or divalent gp. contg. 2 or more types of atoms from C, H, N, O and S; R5 and R6 = H, halogen or 1-12C alkyl or R5 + R6 = a 5-6-membered ring; R7 and R8 = H, halogen, CN, NO2, 1-12C alkyl or a 1-12C (substd.) (hetero)aromatic gp. USE/ADVANTAGE - The photocured compsn. has excellent durability, making it suitable for lithographic printing plates, give good quality prints. The negative-working compsn. is also suitable for ICs, photomasks, ect. In an example, macromer (MM) was prepd. by polymerising a mixt. of 5 g mercaptopropionic acid, 0.8 g 4,4'-azobis(4-cyano-valeric acid). 100 g 2-methoxyethyl acetate and 95 g 2-(3,4-dimethyl- 2,5-dioxo-pyrrolidin-1-yl)ethyl methacrylate (VI) at 85 deg.C, adding 18.4 g 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and 1.2 g 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine and then, in 1 hr., a soln. of 19.2 dicyclohexylcarbodiimide in 50 ml CH2Cl2 in 1 hr. and storring 4 hr. at room temp., adding 7 ml HCOOH, stirring for 1 hr. and filtering. The prod. was pptd. in hexane and isolated, giving 58 g MM as a viscous prod. with Mw = 2700. A mixt. of 20 g MM, 60 g (VI), 20 g methacrylic acid, 1 g 2,2'-azobis(dimethyl isobutyrate) and 100 g 1-methoxy-2-propanol (VII) was dripped in 2.5 hr into 100g (VII). The mixt. was stirred 3 hr. at 75 deg.C, then the prod. was pptd. in water, filtered and dried, giving 92 g polymer (A) with Mw = 59000 as a white solid. A control polymer (B) with Mw = 51000 was prepd. similarly, except that (VI) was used instead of MM.
