Various meat strips or rolls are cut into slices of equal weight by a machine equipped with a press (14). The meat (36) is placed in the press, where it is compressed axially against a stop. The axial compression forces the meat to conform to the cross-section of the press housing. The meat is then forced from the press at a stepwise motion and cut into slices (20) of identical thickness between each step. Each slice has the same area and thickness, and thus all slices have the same weight.
