The appts. fixes the door, esp. of a motor vehicle, in at least one open position. A lockable fixing element (20) pivotably links one end (22) to a door frame (16) outside its pivot axis. The element is fixed and guided by a device (63) with a part which exerts a force on the element to hold the door in an open position against unintentional motion. The device is actuated by a controlled motor drive (62) to clamp the fixing element with a static or relatively moving door or release it if the door is moving at faster than a defined speed. ADVANTAGE - Operates automatically when door is static or moving slowly and retains door position until set force is exceeded.
