The invention concerns a method for detecting and counting defects in a length of yarn, using a camera (5), a computer (8) and an image-processing programme. The yarn (30) is illuminated at an intensity dependent on the diameter of the yarn (30) and an image recorded by the camera (5). The image thus recorded is digitized in the computer (8) by means of the image-processing programme and low-contrast points filtered out. The remaining points are collected to form cohesive zones which are classified according to predetermined sizes and stored in a memory. The device used to carry out the method is designed to accommodate two yarn spools and has a camera (5) as well as two guide rollers (15, 16), disposed a certain radial distance apart, over which the yarn (30) is deflected, at least one (16) of the guide rollers being driven.
