The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for processing graphic and alphanumeric data recorded on a medium in the form of pages in order to constitute a database which can be interrogated and to allow editing of information, in which the following steps are carried out automatically: A) determination of digitised image pages; B) a first digitised image page processing phase allowing: verification that these phases are sequential, determination of characteristic elements of each page, determination of the deviation angle, mask fabrication, windowing, correction of the alignment, identification of characteristic elements; segmentation of images; recording, on separate files, digitised image pages, digitised image entities, digitised segmented images capable of being edited; C) a second processing phase consisting in carrying out optical recognition of characters from the blocks relating to the alphanumeric information from segmented images and recording of the data on a file constituting a database which can be interrogated. <IMAGE>
