The invention relates to a method of forming a metal article from a volume of molten metal which comprises inserting at least an inlet tube (11) of a hollow body (10) of refractory material comprising said inlet tube and a communicating larger cavity (13) into the said volume and allowing the molten material to fill said body, removing the hollow body and its contained charge of molten material from said volume, allowing the charge to solidify and removing the refractory material containing the solidified article and the solidified metal (or sprue) cast in the inlet tube (11) to leave a casting (18) shaped to conform to said cavity.
