<p>A steering shaft is rotatably mounted within a steering column housing (14, 16) and is formed of two telescopingly engaged steering shaft members (140, 142). A portion of the steering shaft member (142) is deformed into a notch (120) formed at one end (146) of the other steering shaft member (140) to mechanically and non-separably interconnect the two shaft members (140, 142) together. A longitudinally extending projection (130) is formed in the outer steering shaft member (142) and engages the inner disposed steering shaft member (140) to rigidly interconnect the two steering shaft members (140, 142).</p> |
