PURPOSE:To judge the necessity of down-shift from the accelerated state of a vehicle so as to perform appropriate acceleration by providing a controller with an acceleration control means, an accelerated state judging means and a down-shift judging means. CONSTITUTION:In a controller 8 for controlling engine output and an automatic transmission 5, first target acceleration alpha1 is set to perform acceleration from the time instant t1 when a reset control switch 18 or an accelerating switch 19 is operated. In the case of judging the actual acceleration alpha to have reached the first target acceleration alpha1 in the time instant t2 after the lapse of the specified time T1, second target acceleration alpha2 is set to perform acceleration without commanding down-shift. In the case of the actual acceleration not having reached the first target acceleration, the controller 8 commands down- shift to the automatic transmission 5 to perform sharp acceleration. Also on the second target acceleration alpha2 the necessity of down-shift is judged in the same way to perform appropriate acceleration.
