Adjustable tyres can have their friction properties changed by applying special pressure agents to bores or chambers in the tread area. In the structure there are elastic bores or pressure-controlling lines filled with electroviscous substances; these can be converted from the liq. to the solid state by applying a voltage to them which also combines increases in their volume and pressure; the effect produced is to increase the dia. of the tread, to concentrate the absorbed forces on a smaller surface, and to split off films of ice or water. ADVANTAGE - The condition of the tread can be modified rapidly (to suit changed road conditions). The road grip can therefore be improved as required, whether the vehicle is moving or stationary.
