The remote control device allows the control of a vehicle by moving a transmitter (1) nearer to the vehicle. When the transmitter reaches a position which is more than a set distance from the receiver (3), the receiver still operates in reception mode. A button (A) on the receiver transmits intermittent signals which contain identification and command information corresp. to the pressed button. As the operator approaches the vehicle and enters a zone for automatic operation, the received signal level exceeds a set value and the signal is received. Identification and command information is decoded and the commands carried out. Pressing another button (C) transmits a high amplitude initiating signal. If this is carried out from outside the zone for automatic operation, the high amplitude signal is received and automatic mode is set. ADVANTAGE - Allows automatic mode to be set even if operator is far from vehicle. Operator does not require free hand to use transmitter.
