Gas detector for ionizing radiation, especially of the beta type leading to the emission of energetic electrons by a surface. The detector includes a sealed enclosure (1) containing an ionizing electron-generating gas and at least two grids (G1, G2) at different electric potentials, one of them constituting the anode. The invention is characterized in that the grid(s) (G1, G2) are formed in a first direction by a plurality of electrically insulating wires (101) serving as a support and in a second direction distinct from the first, by a plurality of electrically conductive and resistive wires (102). The above-mentioned wires form a woven mesh. Application in the production of high intensity beta ray gas detectors, providing mono-dimensional or two-dimensional detection.
