In a telecommunications system having a site (42) employing several telecommunications channels, each channel is allocated to a desired intensity threshold of the received signals. This channel is allocated to a subscriber unit (43a, 43b) as a function of the intensity of the signal received at the site and of the power control range of the subscriber unit. The selection of the channel can be performed either by the site, or by the subscriber unit. In an environment of the FDMA type (frequency-division multiple access), each frequency division channel can be allocated to a specific intensity threshold. In an environment of the TDMA type (time-division multiple access), without overlapping of the time intervals, each channel can be allocated to a different threshold. It is possible to combine the FDMA and TDMA environments. <IMAGE>
