A bio-catalyst with immobilised microorganisms or enzymes, which have been embedded by a gel inclusion method in a polymer matrix, has a polymer matrix formed of a relatively large block with a number of borings, channels or other open-pored hollow spaces, through which a medium contg. a substrate can flow through the catalyst. Pref. the block may be formed of adjacent or superimposed profiled polymer plates and may be surrounded by a casing with connections so that the biocatalyst can be incorporated, eg., in a pipeline. Several such bio-catalyst, opt. with different catalytic properties, may be combined in a bundle or in series. During the storage or transport of the bio-catalyst, the pore system of the block may be filled with a medium giving biological or biochemical stability to the microorganisms or enzymes. ADVANTAGE - The matrix offers a sufficiently large interface to the medium, is dimensionally stable, and can be prepd., stored, transported and used in a normal appts. It is easily exchanged for a new block when necessary.
