Optically pure thiazolidinedione alcohols and ethers of the formula: (wherein Y is CH~OH, CH~OH or CH~OR in which R is alkyl, phenylalkyl, phenyl or alkoxyalkyl) and synthetic intermediates for preparing the alcohols and ethers. These compounds have utility as hypoglycemic and hypocholesterolemic agents. Process for the preparation of a series of optically pure thiazolidinedione alcohols and ethers. Pharmaceutical compositions of the alcohols ethers including pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof.
