Disclosed are silver halide photographic materials, comprising a support having thereon a layer which contains a compound represented by the following general formula (I): <IMAGE> (I) wherein A1 and A2 each represents groups of atoms which are required to complete aromatic rings, which may be substituted or unsubstituted; R1, R2, R3 and R4 each independently represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, a phenyl group, a five- or six-membered heterocyclic group, an acyl group or an alkoxy group, which may be substituted or unsubstituted; R5 and R6 each independently represents an alkyl group, a phenyl group or a five- or six-membered heterocyclic group, which may be substituted or unsubstituted; X represents a p-valent anion; p represents 1, 2 or 3; L represents a methine group which may be substituted or unsubstituted, or a trivalent linking group wherein three, five or seven methine groups are linked by conjugated double bonds; and X may be bonded to A1, A2, R1 to R6 or L to form an intramolecular salt. These materials are spectrally sensitized action for light having a long wavelength, but the dyes of general formula (I) have comparatively short methine chains.
