In apparatus for optically coupling optical fibres, each optical fibre fits into and is supported by an expanded-beam type optical component (46, 48) that is optically structured to collimate the output from an optical fibre when the fibre is located at the focus of the optical component. The optical components fit into a housing (40) in such a manner that the optical components are aimed in different directions. The housing includes optical means (50.52), including a holographic layer (52), positioned within the housing to intercept the output from one optical component (46) and precisely direct it into the other optical component (48) and vice versa. The holographic layer is initially interferometically formed, by exposure to radiation directed through the fibre in the optical component, with variations of index of refraction. The use of the holographic layer in the optical path permits the tolerances related to the angular tilt of the lens surfaces of such optical components to be greatly relaxed. More than two optical fibres can be coupled in predetermined combinations using two or more holographic layers. |
