The generator scans the interior of bores with a light beam radially deflected by a rotating mirror (3) which also returns the reflected light to a light detector. The mirror is mounted centrally in a hollow spindle (7), inclined to its imaginary rotation axis and with a radial light outlet. A non-rotating light source placed on the imaginary rotation axis is directed towards the mirror. Part of the light reflected from the surface according to surface quality passes back through the outlet, via the mirror to diverge conically inside the spindle, round the light source (21) and via a collection lens (22) which focusses it on the detector (24). The detector output is evaluated by an electronic controller (34). ADVANTAGE - Rapid, high resolution, accurate image generation. Large dynamic range free of outside influences is achieved with image signal bandwidth extending from d.c. to GHz region.
