The piston top land lies between the head and first ring groove and has a catalytic coating. The coating (10) should be applied to the top land (7) at a distance (12) from the head (3) such as to exclude self-ignition of the fuel. Pref. the distance (12) from the coating top edge to the outline of the head edge remains constant. USE/ADVANTAGE - I.c. engines. Catalytic coating on top piston land is spaced from head to prevent premature self-ignition.
