A diaphragm pump has a pumping chamber with suction/pressure valves which are elastically deformed by the operating medium. It has a flexible tube with diaphragm valves at the ends. Concentrically around this, is a tube which is not constricted when unstressed and which has a body on the conveying part of the pump filled with a gas or liq. and connected to an actuating device. The valves are metal or plastic and the tube is made of e.g. rubber, plastics, silicone, or fabric according to the substance being pumped. ADVANTAGE - The medium pumped flows through as if through a smooth tube and only makes contact with the tube. No seals are required. The smooth flow effect means that there are no pressure drops. If the pump is not operated it can serve merely as a flow tube. It can be used as e.g. a triple squeeze valve. Liquids or gases can be fed into the pumped medium through a microporous tube or fabric; similarly liquids or gases can be extracted from the medium. The pump and valve casings can be made as half-shell construction and applied in a sec. operation. The prods. are slim. The function is not adversely affected by long fibres or solid particles in the pumped medium.
