Mfr. of a marking hole in a thermoplastics material, where a hot gas stream, pref. through a non-contacting nozzle, is directed onto the thermoplastics material to form a hole of corresponding dimensions. Pref. the velocity or pressure of the gas stream may be adjusted to give an approximately cylindrical hole; excessive pressure tends to a conical hole. The nozzle dia. may be 1-5mm, for corresponding sized holes. The hole depth may be controlled by the velocity, temp. (w.r.t. plastics m.pt.) and duration of the gas stream. The hole(s) may be blind or through. The plastics material may be nylon, polyester, a laminate of these, or other suitable material. USE/ADVANTAGE - For marking plastics material in woven, mesh, fleece, film, foam or Charmeuse form, esp. for garment shoulder-pads. Avoids difficulties of achieving and maintaining correct temps. with hot-needle method. Avoids solid contact with workpiece and risk of adhering to it, avoiding contamination of plastics material and needle, yellowing of former and cleaning of latter
