Apparatus for removing relatively low density contaminant, particularly oil or cutting fluid, from water comprises an initial coalescing means 10 leading into a settling chamber 4. Floating contaminant is discharged from chamber 4 over an adjustable weir 17, while water is pumped from the bottom of chamber 4, up pipe 23 to a cross-flow membrane filter 25, able to remove dissolved contaminant as well as droplets. Purified water flows from filter 25 to a final active carbon filter 37, while the rejects from filter 25 is recycled to the inlet side of coalescing means 10. Coalescing means 10 may comprise a coalescing filter cartridge of tubular form, enclosed by a casing 2 which may also include baffles and means to release entrained gas. The pump 22 is controlled by a float switch 28 in response to the water level in chamber 4, with an alarm actuated if the level rises too high. <IMAGE> |
