Dye donor elements and assemblages for thermal dye transfer processing comprising a polymeric support having thereon, in order, a subbing layer and a dye layer comprising a dye dispersed in a binder, and wherein the subbing layer comprises a copolymer having recurring monomer units derived from at least one linear vinyl copolymer comprising: J B D wherein: each R1 is, independently, H or methyl; R2 and R3 each, independently, represents: a) a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; or b) a substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl group of 5 to 8 carbon atoms; R4 represents: a) a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group of 2 to 4 carbon atoms substituted with at least 1 hydroxyl group; or b) from 2 to about 20 ethoxy groups substituted with at least 1 hydroxyl group; R5 represents: a) a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbon atoms; or b) a substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkyl group of 5 to 8 carbon atoms; w represents 5 to 50 weight-percent; x represents 0 to 40 weight-percent; and y represents 50 to 95 weight-percent.
