摘要 PURPOSE:To eliminate color partiality and obtain a high-contrast image by providing optical phase plates, which align the polarizing direction of polarized light from a polarized light conversion device with the optical axes of respective liquid crystal light valves in respective optical paths of R, G, and B. CONSTITUTION:White linearly polarized light emitted by a polarizing elements 31 is separated into three colors, i.e., red, green, and blue by a dichroic mirror 32 which reflects red light and transmits green light and blue light, a dichroic mirror 33 which reflects the blue light and transmits green light, and a total reflecting mirror 34. The respective light beams are converted by the lambda/2 optical phase plates 51R, 51G, and 51B into linearly polarized light beams whose polarizing directions slant at 45 to the paper surface, and they pass through the light crystal light valves 57R, 57G, and 57B whose molecule orienting directions slant at 45 to the paper surface and then pass through polarizing plates 58R, 58G, and 58B. For, for example, the red light among those light beams, the lambda/2 optical phase plate 51R is selected so that the retardation is close in 1/2 wavelength in the red wavelength range.
