A method for preparation of technical 4-chlor-2-methylphenol containing over 80 percent of clear compound, through chlorination of 2-methylphenol with sulfuryl chloride in the presence of anhydrous zinc chloride as catalyst, carried out at a mole ratio of sulfuryl chloride to 2-methylphenol being from 0.9-1.1 : 1 and at a temperature of 55-60 degrees C, characterised in that sulfuryl chloride is supplied to the reactor simultaneously with 1.5 percent zinc chloride solution in 2-methylphenol, heated up to a temperature of 50 degrees C.
