<p>An improved sealing means (12) is provided for sealing a solid electrolyte ceramic body (14) within a metal housing (30) for use in an oxygen sensing device (10) which is suitable for detecting the oxygen concentration within automotive exhaust gases emitted from an internal combustion engine. A relatively thick annular member (12) is provided between the ceramic body (14) and the metal housing (30). The material of this annular member (12) is chosen so as to have a higher thermal coefficient of expansion than the ceramic body (14) and metal housing (30) being sealed, and is preferably an appropriate austenitic stainless steel. Thus, when the sealed area is heated, the annular member (12) expands more than the ceramic body (14) and the metal housing (30), thereby retaining the sealed area in compression and effectively sealing the ceramic body (14) from entry of unwanted exhaust gases into its reference air chamber (16). <IMAGE></p> |
