Copolymers of acrylonitrile, vinyl butyl ether and a mono-ester of maleic or fumaric acid are prepared from their monomers by conventional polymerization methods. Alternatively, the vinyl constituents may be copolymerized with maleic anhydride and the product refluxed with the calculated amount of methanol or ethanol to give the mono-ester. The mono-ester component should comprise 40-60 molar per cent of the molecule, and the ratio of acrylonitrile to vinyl butyl ether may be 1:4. In an example, 4 mols. of vinyl butyl ether, 1 mol. of acrylonitrile and 5 mols. of maleic anhydride are copolymerized in methyl acetate with benzyl peroxide catalyst. Ethanol is then added and the mixture refluxed. Specification 790,023, [Group XX], is referred to.
|
