Coolant leaving the engine (1) is split up into two flows between the engine (1) and the radiator (2). One flow goes uncooled through a three way thermostat (3) and on reaching a preset temp. causes it to open. The cooled second flow from the cooler or radiator (2) flows into the three-way thermostat (3) and combines with the first flow. USE/ADVANTAGE - The cooling system reduces thermal stress on an IC engine by lowering and stabilising the temp. difference between coolant entering and leaving the engine.
